"New Year - New You"
If your new year's resolutions have already gone by the wayside, then this article is just for you!
Very often, most people fail to fulfill their new year's resolutions because:-
- They expect too much of themselves, too soon
- Their expectations are unrealistic
- They try to achieve too many goals all at once
- They give up before they have even started
If any of these points apply to you, then do not despair, help is at hand. What life coaching helps you to do is to take a step back and look at what you can realistically achieve, then set specific goals that are measurable to your capabilities. So, for instance, if your new year's resolution is to lose some weight, then consider the following:
- How much weight do you want to lose and what would be a realistic target e.g. 1-2 lbs a week
- Consider what steps you are going to take in order to achieve your goal without depriving yourself of the foods you enjoy
- Throw out or use up all the foods you feel will hinder your success, i.e. crisps, chocolate and alcohol
- Plan your meals and most importantly your shopping list
Because very often when you go shopping you tend to buy exactly the same kind of foods every week, subconsciously, without even thinking about it. Pushing a trolley around the supermarket is like driving your car down a familiar road, you end up going into auto-pilot!
Set yourself a date by which you intend to say, lose half a stone. Then when you have reached your target, if you still have more weight to lose, focus on losing another half a stone, and so on.
Also, by focusing on just one goal at a time instead of trying to attain several goals all in one go, you will achieve much greater success. Finally, be kind to yourself! If your diet slips then don't beat yourself up about it. The same with any other goal, just regain your focus and consider what strategies you can come up with to overcome self doubt, fear of failure or even fear of success. Also, make sure you look at your goals every single day to assess how well you are progressing. Keep them in a prominent place and don't forget to consider your reward.
If all else fails then hire a life coach or a buddy, someone who can support and encourage you in your journey and is willing to motivate you when the chips are down. Have fun, and good luck. I wish you much success in 2008 - Make this a year to remember!
