What is counselling? - Jayne Briggs - Life Solutions - Life Coaching

What is counselling?

Counselling, is not about giving advice, it provides the space for a person to explore their feelings without being judged, stereo-typed or criticised. My qualifications are in person centred theory which was founded by Carl Rogers (1902-1987), approximately 40 years ago. Person centred counselling helps the client to develop their own autonomy through active listening, empathy and reflecting thoughts and feelings. Carl Rogers believed that everyone had it within them, to find the solutions to their own problems, if they were only given the space to voice their innermost thoughts and explore their feelings.

Counselling provides a secure and confidential space to help you to look at any problems, issues or conflict you are facing or trying to deal with now. You will have the opportunity to explore your thoughts and feelings and try to work out a way of dealing with them. With the help of a counsellor you can learn to accept yourself, go with your gut feelings and trust your own instincts. Counselling helps you to develop autonomy where you can develop trust and belief in yourself rather than look to the 'so-called' experts in your life. With the help of a counsellor you become more self aware and gain a clearer perspective on situations you are finding difficulty handling.

I also work with a cognitive model called Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, which was developed by Albert Ellis, an American psychologist in 1955.  Ellis believed that it is how a person perceives a situation or event, that creates the emotional disturbance in their life.  The ABCDE model of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, helps the client to dispute their self defeating beliefs that lead to self-perpetuating irrational behaviour, and replace them with a rational belief, thus letting go of 'musts, shoulds, oughts and have to's.  REBT has a very high success rate and helps people with all kinds of problems from relationship issues to fear, anxiety and depression.   Working with REBT can help a client to let go of their 'neurosis' and start to lead a much happier life, and build better relationships.

"I initially went to see Jayne for life coaching, but at our first appointment decided that counselling would be more beneficial.  Jayne helped me, with the use of REBT, to work through my problems and I have found her a big help".  SW - Sheffield.

I work with adults and children from the age of 15 years, and also with clients who are referred from Collaborative Family Lawyers.  Such clients are usually in the process of going through a legal seperation or divorce.  Finding yourself in such circumstances can be highly stressful and for some couples, they can find the prospect of seperating from a long standing partner very hard to come to terms with.

Where does the counselling take place?

From the 1st January 2009, I will be seeing clients from the House of Elliott at no. 9 Penistone Road, Grenoside, Sheffield, and at 273 Glossop Road, Sheffield.   I also do home visits in certain circumstances, e.g. for people with disabilities.    If you are going through a difficult time, or have some personal issues, that won't go away, then you would probably benefit from counselling. Send me your contact details (see contact form below) together with a brief outline of the reason why you seek counselling and I will get right back to you.

How much does it cost?

I charge £40.00-£50.00 per session, and each session lasts approximately 50 minutes.  In some cases, fees may vary depending on financial circumstances.

Client Testimonial:

"Back in autumn 2007 I had hit a wall..... Jayne Briggs came to my rescue.

I had just turned 40, left a loveless and childless marriage 5 years ago, and
I had no sense of who I was and no way of controlling a neediness for some one to love me and make me feel good about myself.   I wanted a family, I wanted love and reassurance.  I put myself second in any relationship I formed and became desperately crushed when those relationships failed.  I felt I had failed, and could not see much point in going on....

Jayne was recommended to me through a friend who was studying life coaching. Jayne had given a lecture at a seminar then later chatted to this friend of mine who mentioned that I needed help. I was passed Jayne’s number and quite fearful and trembling, I phoned and the voice of an angel answered.

We arranged to meet and within a few weeks of regular meetings I was feeling my old self.  Jayne is kind, caring and understanding.   She is impressively qualified to both counsel and life coach. She never stops learning and uses a wealth of strategies to bring forward the  ‘you’ that was always there but just needed bringing out.   Jayne is not just a counsellor but a friend with a true healing spirit, who will bring the best out of you and help to heal the hurt and pain and damage of the past well away from harming you again.

Thank you, Jayne you are a star and I hope more people discover the gift of living that you bring to us who have found you.

I still attend Jayne’s workshops, from time to time. You can never stop learning to move forward and Jayne is a great role model for proving this."

Thank you so much
Love and best wishes Fiona xx

How do I make an appointment?

Simply fill in the contact form, below and I will get right back to you or you can phone or email me, and an appointment will be made for you at a mutually agreed time.

What happens next?

When you attend your first session, you will be taken through an assessment to identify the issues you are presenting and a contract will be agreed between both parties. Six sessions will be offered, to start with and future sessions will be arranged to suit your requirements. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. All sessions last approximately 50 minutes and are strictly confidential, within the limits of confidentiality.

Unfortunately, there is still a negative stigma attached to counselling, insomuch as not everyone wants to admit they need counselling.  For some people who hold this view, they find it difficult to seek help, when life becomes extremely difficult.  Consequently, they will continue to stay in 'denial' until something drastic happens to promote change.  If you are unsure about whether to seek counselling,  then read my article, "You don't have to be 'mad' to seek counselling".  After reading the article you may decide differently?
